Prior to recent tragic events in another state that have received ongoing media attention, police twice arrested a North Carolina teenager who allegedly threatened to blow up a school in his area.

While police have not indicated whether they have found any evidence suggesting the teen was planning to carry out the alleged threat, they have indicated that they take all such threats very seriously, which is not surprising given the times that we live in.

According to police, the teen was arrested in early February after someone reportedly heard him threaten to use explosives on an area charter school. When he bonded out of jail, someone at the jail facility apparently heard him make the same threat as he was leaving the facility. Police then had the young man arrested again on a new charge. This time, the judge set a $40,000 bail bond.

The point of this story is that one does not have the right to make threats in North Carolina and can face severe criminal consequences for doing so, even if they had absolutely no intention of carrying them out.

In some situations, honest people make threats in a fit of anger or while they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Sometimes, a mental illness or simple bad judgement can play a role in a person’s threatening words.

Other times, it may be that the person being accused was misheard or that his or her words are simply being exaggerated or taken out of context.

In any event, the state will take these sorts of matters seriously, so it is important for those who are accused to take them seriously as well.
